🥂 The Rise of Champagne as Medicine
In the 19th century, Champagne wasn’t just a celebratory drink—it was marketed as a tonic for everything from fatigue to digestive issues.
Doctors and pharmacists sometimes prescribed it, believing its effervescence and alcohol content had therapeutic benefits.
🛠️ The Champagne Tap: A Clever Contraption
The Champagne Tap was designed to preserve the fizz and prevent waste. Once a bottle was opened, the pressure would quickly escape, so this device allowed for controlled dispensing.
Design features:
Three small holes at the base of the screw allowed the liquid to rise.
The top unscrewed to reveal a small aperture.
The internal pressure of the Champagne forced a stream of liquid up through the tap, enabling a neat pour without removing the cork.
It was often made of metal—brass or silver—and sometimes ornately decorated, reflecting the elegance of the time.
🎩 Victorian Elegance Meets Practicality
These taps were popular in high society and among the health-conscious elite.
They also served a social function: allowing hosts to serve guests without the spectacle (or mess) of popping corks.
